Albrecht Maurer / SYNTOPIA

.
excerpt from the infomaterial
The violinist and composer Albrecht Maurer studied violin at the Musikhochschule Cologne. In addition, he pursued the study of non-European tonal systems and computer music. He gathered his experience with new and experimental music through intensive work with many composers from the Kagel "school". Albrecht Maurer has performed throughout Europe as a soloist, as well as with varying groups. He has worked with many jazz musicians including Kent Carter, Theo Joergensmann, Bobo Stenson, Norbert Stein, Klaus Kugel, Charlie Mariano, Karl Berger, Steve Arguelles, Lauren Newton, Wolter Wierbos, Benoit Delbecq, and Barre Phillips.

In the last few years Albrecht Maurer has concentrated on the composition and interpretation of partially improvised music. His works are characterized by sounds and loops, a broad timbral spectrum, and percussive imitation and grooves all in combination with the energy of jazz and a classical technique.

Albrecht Maurer QUARTET WORKS
“The music sounds new, fresh and exiting, because instead of placing improvisation within his pieces as a compositional element, Maurer creates compositions that sounds as if they grow out of the improvisations and vice versa.

Maurer plays the violin with classical phrasing but with an improviser`s fearlessness in using harmonics and string noise. Achim Krämer plays with the savage restraint of the great improvising percussionists, in an ensemble where, at one time or another, everyone plays percussively. Kent Carter on bass matches Kramer´s iron will in resisting the temptation to fill up the space in this small ensemble, and the lack of amplification preserves his beautiful tone and the full dynamic range of his fleet, cello-like arco work. Although after my first listening it was a startling Don Cherry-like fanfare from Wierbos´ upper register that stuck in my mind. QUARTET WORKS not only stands on its own; it sets the standard for what jazz should sound like at the century´s end.” (Coda Magazine, USA 95, David Lee)

Albrecht Maurer SOLO WORKS
"The feeling of thoughts"
" ... with virtuosity Maurer lets influences of different genres flow within one another: from classical west European music; through to the sound aesthetic of new music; to jazz phrasings, far Eastern forms of expression and the impulses of free music. Maurer understands it due to his strong personality with which he writes these different roots, in order to find an individual musical language. Far away from every tormented mishmash or multiculture he forms moving atmospheres of warm melancholia, sensual power up to ecstatic cries, often on the edge of being purely abstract. Maurer`s technically-outstanding playing contains an energetic power and dynamic, that produces tension from meditative concentration, devotion and unlimited musical curiosity." (NMZ 97, Michael Scheiner)

Kent Carter & Albrecht Maurer JUILLAGUET COLLECTION
"In the south-west of France, south of the town of Angoulême, lies the little village of Juillaguet. South of this, at the end of a dirt road, one reaches chez Kent Carter et Michala Marcus and their MAD Studio. (MAD as in "Music And Dance" - a focus on sanity.) It may seem a long way from the Boston jazz scene of the early 1960s, or the New York "October Revolution" of 1964, but for Kent Carter it's an almost idyllic centre to continue his varied musical pursuits. The music on this CD is not really anticipated by the legion of musical collaborations he has been involved in since moving to Europe in the mid-1960s - with almost everybody from Paul Bley to Derek Bailey and from Max Roach to Noah Howard. Even his extended membership of the Paris based Steve Lacy Quintet throughout the 1970s doesn't really suggest some of the subsequent directions. To get pointers to this music, one has to listen to the four mainly solo LPs he made in the mid to late 1970s, which feature some superb string solos and conversations with himself. Another foretaste came from the 1980s Kent Carter String Trio with Carlos Zingaro and François Dreno, which recorded THE WILLISAU SUITES on ITMP.”
