Born 1954
1973-77
Studied Performing Arts (music, dance, theater); Ethnomusicology (African, North Indian, Chinese); Philosophy of Aesthetics; and Eastern Religion at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. In 1974 Morgan founded his first open-door workshop for Free-Form Music Improvisation. In 1976 he attended the legendary Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY, and studied under Karl Berger, Don Cherry, and Oliver Lake as part of his external studies program. Moreover, he created his first compositional work for dance “Distress Mistress”, and performed his first Ensemble work (14 piece) entitled “The Delirium Dimension”. In 1977 he created his first Interdisciplinary Work (multi-media) “Galactic Visions”, a composition for music, dance, slide projectors, costumes, and light design.
1978-81
Conceptualized and composed for several collaborative interdisciplinary works: “It’s Only Money”; “CASH”; “Transient Landscapes”; and “Mykrocozm”, whereby he also had directing and acting responsibilities.
1982-83
Founded “Presto Chango” with Andrew Woodruff and Robert Heywood, a musical theater/performance group that incorporated costumes and stage design.
1984-86
Co-founded the NAO(New Art Orchestra) with Paul Hoskin in Seattle. Composed “Opera for the Milliard Millennium”. Worked for MUZAK as a supervisor in the ’Background‘ department to re-evaluate their existing library of music.
1987-88
Moved to Birmingham, AL and worked with dancers Mary Horn and Susan Hefner, and started an on-going collaboration with LaDonna Smith. Created and performed “Portable Episodes” with Mary Horn and the Shakin‘ Ray Levis‘.
1988-89
First tour to Europe with the Seattle based trio Clank(w/ Johnny Calcagno and Charly Rowen), and worked with several international musicians from Denmark, England, Germany, and Czechoslovakia.
1991-02
Resides in Cologne, Germany, remaining active in the field of Improvised Music. He has been invited to several festivals in Western Europe, and has worked with Alan Silva, Keith Rowe, Peter Kowald, Paul Lytton, Thomas Lehn, and Xu Feng Xia just to name a few. In 1994 he established another open-door workshop for Conceptual Composition and Improvisation in Cologne, which led to invitations to lead workshops in Bielefeld, Hamburg, Lisbon, Leeds and Wuppertal. Also in 1994 he composed another interdisciplinary work called “In the Shadow of the Gambler” that was performed in Cologne and Krefeld. Moreover, he has led three classes through a creative process focused on Installation and Performance(“Elements”; “Haunted House”; and “N-Station” respectively) at the Tekniks Skole in Copenhagen.
