De Joode is currently one of the most active bass players on the Dutch improvised music circuit. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone colour, exploration of the outer registers, idiosyncratic improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognisable and intriguing sound. 17 improvised pieces on his first solo-cd “Olo” (distributed by ToonDist (www.toondist.nl) ) show how rich and complex his sound on the doublebass is.. Common Senses, a piece for improvised double bass and string orchestra, was written for him by Gerard Ammerlaan and has been performed several times by The Nederlands Jeugd StrijkOrkest (Netherlands Youth String Orchestra) led by Roland Kieft.

Beside the Ab Baars Trio de Joode is active in the following groups: Ig Henneman (string quartet), Eric Boeren 4tet (with Han Bennink and Michael Moore), Michiel Braam (Bik Bent Braam, Trio with Michael Vatcher, Bentje Braam), Trio Fuhler/Bennink/DeJoode, the Chris Abelen Quintet (including Corrie van Binsbergen) and the extravagant INTERMISSION. He plays in various groups with Joost Buis. Together with him and Eric Boeren he is one of the driving forces of the informal concerts of improvised music of the Amsterdam Zaal 100.
Together with bass saxophonist Klaas Hekman has set up a bass group which features three double bass players – William Parker (USA), Hideji Taninaka (Japan) and de Joode himself. New developments include solo concerts, APA INI? : quartet with Tobias Delius, Serigne Gueye and Hilary Jeffrey Delius, Trio with Assif Tsahar and Hamid Drake, Trio with Georg Graewe and work with dance improvisers such as David Zambrano, Eileen Standley and Toru Iwashita (Japan tour 2002).
